Maybe, Just Maybe

“Hey Baby you about ready?” Malcolm asked walking through the bedroom.

“Oh so I’m baby?” Patrice answered.

“I didn’t get where I am in life by being timid when I want something.” he said with a smile. “I thought it was a myth when they said women take hours to get ready.”

“You’re the one that wants me to meet your mother after our first night out. You only get one chance to make a first impression.” She responded.

He walked up behind her slowly admiring her tall silhouette in the mirror. “Trust me you are perfect and we have to get going because we have to go get Riley.”

“Mallory doesn’t mind taking her to brunch with her and Mrs. Vanessa.”

“I want my mother to meet all of you and Riley is a big part of who you are. It doesn’t matter if that is your sister’s child in my eyes that’s your baby. Plus, momma loves kids.” Then he raised his eyebrows as if to say you’re next. She couldn’t believe that this was happening right now. He was different, she had dated wealthy men before but they were all the same. They had an idea of what she made and that gave them a great opportunity to try to impress her with money but Malcolm was different. What he liked about her was that she wasn’t rich, petty and materialistic. You could tell the type of guy he was by the house that he lived in. it was big but not a mansion and most of the furniture she saw in Rooms to Go. It was very nice but nothing about him said he would buy a ten-thousand-dollar sofa. He hated upscale dining he would rather eat wings and fries. But most importantly she loved the fact that it was all about her.

She walked out of the bathroom, grabbed her bag and they hopped in his Range Rover to head over to get Riley. They arrived just about the same time as Mallory and Allen arrived.

“So how was last night?” Patrice asked Mallory.

“I was too drunk to remember.” She whispered in Patrice’s ear.

“So did you?”

“Ask me later on tonight.” Mallory said with slight laughter.

When Riley saw Malcolm she ran up to him like she knew. “Kids know good people when they see them.” Malcolm said.

“Really, go put her to the car like you are about to take her and we will see about that.”

So Malcom strapped her in the car seat and rolled the window down. “Tell momma bye Riley.” He yelled out.

“By mommy.” Riley said and Malcolm acted as if he was pulling out of the driveway.

“You see her Mallory?”

“Girl you know you are glad that she likes him, stop fronting.”

Mrs. Vanessa walked out of the house and she noticed Malcolm and Allen standing in the driveway. She walked up and kissed Allen on the cheek. “Malcolm?”

“Yes Mrs. Matthews it’s me. I knew it would be only a matter of time before we would meet.”

“Patrice I didn’t know you and Malcolm were an item.
